Public transport

Only use public transport if you have to.

If you are a concessionary bus pass holder, it's advised you do not travel via public transport unless your journey is essential.

When travelling by public transport:

  • avoid rush hours and busy times if possible
  • cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the bin
  • follow advice on staying away from others
  • wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • if soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser

Do not use public transport if:

Bus Travel

We're working closely with Morebus and Yellow Buses to ensure that information is available during this time. Both bus companies are providing a modified level of service to reflect essential travel guidance, whilst continuing to provide journeys for key workers.

Rail Travel

The government has made it clear that public transport must only be used by key workers, or to complete essential journeys. A reduced timetable applies on South Western Railway and Cross - Country trains. Timetables and train stopping patterns are very different from usual arrangements. Check with the train operator or National Rail enquiries before travelling.

Coach Travel

National Express services are temporarily suspended, with an anticipated re-start date of 01 June, subject to change, depending on government advice. Find out more on the National Express website.

Bike share - Beryl Bikes

The Beryl Bike share scheme continues to operate with 350 bikes available for hire across Bournemouth and Poole. This provides a useful alternative transport option for essential journeys. Please see the current guidelines for using the bikes safely at present.

NHS staff and key workers (including in Social Care sector) can now register for free usage of the bikes. Please see this article for details of how to sign up.

Car Club - Co Wheels

If you need to use a Co-wheels car please keep yourself and other members safe.

Although the cleaners have been issued with additional sanitising materials, members are asked to follow guidance from health experts about regular hand cleaning. Members are advised to bring alcohol based disinfectant wipes to wipe down surfaces you touch in the car, and please keep your hands clean by washing or using anti-bacterial hand gel before and after each trip.

Only travel with members of your household and if you are in one of the following groups then please stop using Co-wheels cars for 14 days in the interests of all members:

  • You are under quarantine for COVID-19.
  • Display any of the symptoms of the COVID-19 virus.
  • Are living with or in personal contact with someone currently quarantined or tested positive for the virus.

Offer for all NHS and Care Staff

Co Wheels also want to help those in the front line against Coronavirus. As public transport is affected, many care staff may find it difficult to get to work or get their essential shopping, so we are cutting our rates for front line carers in half. All NHS care staff such as doctors, nurses and paramedics, and all front line carers, like home helps and staff in care homes, will get 50% off bookings.

If you are already a member then contact our Customer team via live chat, email them on info@co-wheels.org.uk, or phone on 0191 375 1050 and send a copy of your work ID to verify it. If you know those who aren’t members and could benefit from it then pass this on and ask them to sign up using the code COVIDCARE so they will not be charged any membership or monthly fees to join.
